Does Melatonin Really Work?

It is almost impossible to approach the subject of sleep aids without hearing about melatonin. Melatonin is a naturally secreted hormone produced in the pineal gland. Its function is sleep regulation. The release of this hormone is stimulated in the darkness and inhibited in the light. Melatonin has been used in many studies for everything from jet-lag to cancer. Of course, it is a very useful component in helping those who can’t rest on their own, as its primary purpose is to aid in the sleeping cycle.

Melatonin has been a great aid for those looking to bolster sleeping ability in the evening hours. It has been helpful for those with mild, intermittent insomnia to those who have night-shifts and need to rest at off hours. Studies show that it works best when taken about twenty to forty minutes before the consumer wishes to sleep. Having low levels of melatonin present in the system have been shown to impede and interrupt sleeping patterns. This is evidence of the need our bodies have for melatonin and proof positive of the advantage melatonin is as a sleep aid ingredient.

Some assertions have even been made that melatonin can actually help to reset your biological clock thereby relieving symptoms that poor sleep can exact upon you in the waking hours. Issues such as extreme fatigue, dizziness, lack of mental clarity or even headaches. Melatonin is a wonderful tool in the war against insomnia. It is a great boon to us all that science has found a way to create this outside of the human body so that those of us who don’t naturally produce the right amount, or just miss a good night’s rest, can enjoy its proven benefits.
